Design Considerations -
Creating an inspiring learning environment was a focal point for the design team which focused on light, acoustics, and indoor air quality trying to provide the maximum flexibility. The design utilizes a variety of colors and shapes in a unifying pattern starting in the main commons area and carries into the academic wing. The design intent was to create a non-institutional atmosphere, one that stimulated the users.
Flexibility was a key to accommodate a wider range of uses including individual learning. Regular classrooms can accommodate multiple layouts and science labs utilize modular work benches. Informal and formal quiet spaces were planned to allow students to work undisturbed. Despite over 70 classrooms, the academic wing can be internally secured through just two locations allowing use of the remaining areas during off hours.
The heart of the school is a large open commons area directly off the main entrance. This space is punctuated with several two-story clerestories windows that spill natural light into the area. The area serves as a reception space for both the performing arts center and the gymnasium during large school events.
