This 42 bed NICU was designed with a combination of patient room types: the perimeter of the unit is lined with private rooms that can be converted to double rooms (for twins) by opening the sliding glass door between the rooms. In the center of the unit, beds are arranged in “pinwheels” of 4 beds anchored by a central column to provide mechanical services to the 4 headwalls.

The “healing gardens” theme provides way-finding by identifying each area of the nursery with a different flower type. Service columns are disguised as wood-clad tree trunks, with green-canopies above.
