New Patient Tower Saint Francis Medical Center
Scope - 9-Story Bed Tower Addition
Size - 286,000 SF
Design Considerations -
A major change for this facility was taking a one story campus and converting its layout into a nine story addition. Circulation in the past was horizontal with long corridors. In keeping with the verticality of the addition, the lobby and dining are an extension with their 16 foot high ceilings. This same element was reflected on the exterior.
The Owner requested the new bed tower design be a unique expression that embraces the hospital’s mission statement “to nurture the healing ministry of the Church” and capture the spirituality of this unique user group. Spirituality is shown on the exterior building design, acknowledging the duality of St. Francis, the patron saint of plants and animals.
One of the most important guiding principles was ‘patients first’ … respect of how care is given, how it engages the patient, the patient’s family, and staff into a safe, nurturing, and participatory environment
